Scriptwriting for Animation Workshop

Some programme news: on the 5 November, 10 – 4pm, we will be running a one–day workshop, run in conjunction with Script and Animation Forum West Midlands, which will explore the particularities of animation production and writing, leading to an individual 60 second script which will then be submitted to the Flip Animation Challenge (more to come on this) with the opportunity to be produced by animators in residence during the festival and screened on the final day of the festival

The workshop is led by Myles McLeod, one half of BAFTA nominated The Brothers McLeod. They are known for their screenwriting and animations as seen on BBC, MTV, Channel 4 and elsewhere and direct commercials for internationally famous studio Aardman Animations. Myles holds a Masters in Screenwriting and writes for television, short film and computer games.

This 5 hour workshop will include:

  • Creating characters
  • Three act structure
  • Scene structure
  • Getting inspired
  • Thinking animated
  • Taking criticism
  • Writing a 60 second script

Cost £25/£20. Tickets available now from Light House box office, info@light-house.co.uk, 01902 716055

A full festival programme will be posted on the website by the end of the month

A short update on flip…

Howdy one and all, and may I briefly introduce myself – I’m Lucy the flip festival assistant. I have been responsible with filing the hundreds of applications we received this year into boxes, folders and spreadsheets… sending emails, and drinking lots and lots of tea.

A few weeks ago, I passed the films on to the panel of judges, who set about the long task of watching all the DVD’s – 222 in total (a satisfyingly round and yet slightly freakish number)! Well, the results are in and though I won’t reveal too much at this stage, it’s set to be a very exciting weekend…

Continuing with the theme of ‘cats’ from an earlier post, I would like to present my favourite cat animation – ‘Cat Man Do’ by Simon Tofield. It won Best Comedy in the British Animation Awards in 2008. For any cat owners/lovers out there, I think you’ll agree it captures the essence of the cat perfectly!

Flipping the Lid

This year’s Flip includes a mini invasion by me and brother Greg. Yes, Peter has let us (The Brothers McLeod) loose on putting together a programme of short animations for the festival. We’ve picked a bunch of animations that have inspired, interested, amused or shocked us in one way or another. It should be a very varied screening with practically no common thread between the films other than we like them and hope they’ll inspire you too.

Thanks go to Holly who’s actually doing all the leg work finding out whether the films are available and requesting them for the festival.

I don’t think we’ve selected anything by any local filmmakers (that could be a whole other programme!), but I do hope they will be well represented. While in Annecy, local animator Sarra Hornby showed me her latest award winning animation on her iPhone. And now I’m showing it to you! Enjoy.

instant animation

 http://www.pacesetter2000.be/tk/v2/?vid=15

I came acoss this installation by Tim Knappen. The clever device instantly animates your drawing and projects it onto the ceiling. Looks like loads of fun and cuts out the pain and loneliness of doing it the normal way. But hang on, isn’t it all about pain and isolation?! Not sure about that one. But for non animators like me with very short attention spans, it looks fun.

Peter

WOW, How many?

Crikey you go off sick for a short while and come back to a deluge! Peter’s desk has disappeared under a tidal wave of packages and despite the closing date having already passed still them come.

There are now approximately 200 entries to this years flip and my, what a mammoth task Peter and the judges have to process them all. I don’t envy them one bit It’s time consuming enough to be adding them to the flip map (more to be added soon) once they’ve been processed let alone sit, watch and have to review every single one!

Now for something not so different from me….Stop Motion.

While I was out in quarantine my colleague Ren sent  me a link to stop motion animation set to the dulcet tones of Bloc Party. This made me feel better for two reasons. I like stop motion and I like Bloc Party, and although I know I promised to be more varied with my postings with my first post on my return it felt fitting to share!

best of Flip 2008

we had a Best of Flip screening on the Tuesday (21 July) at Light House. Lots of people came along and everyone looked happy. I was particularly pleased that Linda McCarthy was able to make it and she wowed the crowd with her models and tiny elephants. We should do this more often

Peter

and the winner is…

congratulations to Joe Lea, winner of this year’s Great Animation Challenge. Norman McLaren meets Space Invaders as one of the judges described it.
