Portfolio Reviews 2

The portfolio review panel this year includes Carla Prada, Principal Animator at Rare Ltd, which is part of the Microsoft Games Division, and has over ten years of animation experience in the videogame and television industry. She hails from Niagara Falls, Canada and started her career at Ubisoft Montreal, Quebec. She then moved into children’s television and commercials before returning to video games. Some of the projects she has worked on are Angela Anaconda, Rayman, Killzone, Little Miss Spider, Banjo Kazooie and BBC Freeview commercials involving Aardman Animation. Trained in classical 2d animation Carla now works solely as a 3d animator.

Rare is famous for developing such games as Golden Eye, Diddy Kong Racing and Banjo Kazooie, to name just a few. Currently the company is working on exciting new innovative titles involving Microsoft’s Natal Camera technology.

Portfolio Review Sessions   6 November, 4.30

Flip is looking for animators to get their showreel reviewed at this year’s festival. We introduced this session last year for the first time and it went down very well. It’s a great opportunity to get your showreel seen by professionals, to get expert feedback and to open doors to new and valuable contacts. The idea (and the catch!) is that you present your showreel to a panel in front of a live audience who also receive the benefit of the panels’ wisdom. The session is supported by Business Link West Midlands. An adviser will provide all 6 animators at this session with creative business support and in addition Business Link West Midlands will also be available to offer advice and guidance to any creative business attending during the day.

This is only open to animators based in the West Midlands. Interested? contact Peter McLuskie, peter@light-house.co.uk, 01902 716055

Scriptwriting for Animation Workshop

Some programme news: on the 5 November, 10 – 4pm, we will be running a one–day workshop, run in conjunction with Script and Animation Forum West Midlands, which will explore the particularities of animation production and writing, leading to an individual 60 second script which will then be submitted to the Flip Animation Challenge (more to come on this) with the opportunity to be produced by animators in residence during the festival and screened on the final day of the festival

The workshop is led by Myles McLeod, one half of BAFTA nominated The Brothers McLeod. They are known for their screenwriting and animations as seen on BBC, MTV, Channel 4 and elsewhere and direct commercials for internationally famous studio Aardman Animations. Myles holds a Masters in Screenwriting and writes for television, short film and computer games.

This 5 hour workshop will include:

  • Creating characters
  • Three act structure
  • Scene structure
  • Getting inspired
  • Thinking animated
  • Taking criticism
  • Writing a 60 second script

Cost £25/£20. Tickets available now from Light House box office, info@light-house.co.uk, 01902 716055

A full festival programme will be posted on the website by the end of the month

London Animation Festival

instant animation

 http://www.pacesetter2000.be/tk/v2/?vid=15

I came acoss this installation by Tim Knappen. The clever device instantly animates your drawing and projects it onto the ceiling. Looks like loads of fun and cuts out the pain and loneliness of doing it the normal way. But hang on, isn’t it all about pain and isolation?! Not sure about that one. But for non animators like me with very short attention spans, it looks fun.

best of Flip 2008

we had a Best of Flip screening on the Tuesday (21 July) at Light House. Lots of people came along and everyone looked happy. I was particularly pleased that Linda McCarthy was able to make it and she wowed the crowd with her models and tiny elephants. We should do this more often

and the winner is…

congratulations to Joe Lea, winner of this year’s Great Animation Challenge. Norman McLaren meets Space Invaders as one of the judges described it.

cats and animation

I came across this nice little animation via the new 4mations site, from the people at Trunk Animation I think, who we featured here at Flip a couple of years back. Anyway, it’s got me thinking again about my special project to programme a screening around animation and cats. I think we could do a whole festival on the theme. Who’s behind me?

The Great Animation Challenge

 http://www.vimeo.com/groups/greatanimationchallenge

The Great Animation Challenge closed on monday and I’m relieved to say we had some submissions. Not as many as I’d hoped for, well lets say 12. But nevermind it’s not the size of your competition that matters but the quality. And there are some pretty nice looking animations in there. See for yourself. Oh, and do come along to the Great Animation Festival screening on the 21 July, meet lots of animators (and some normal people) and see some great films.

Flip Branding

It’s that time of year again, when we’ve been thinking about what Flip 09 branding will look like.

Usually this side of things is a result of a bit of planning and lots of luck. In the past we have seen images and art work from actual films or animators that we like and have adapted it for flyers, web banners, etc. You can imagine that process, not something you can actually plan for.

This year I’ve been a bit more proactive in terms of looking for animators and artwork and I came up trumps with A Man and Ink, who first caught my eye because they had already branded a film festival. Anyway, those goodfellas at A Man and Ink have been working on some artwork, which we’ve been drooling over here at Flip HQ for the past couple of weeks now. On top of that though, we’ve ‘discovered’ a fantastic designer, Rob Hildreth, who put the artwork together and Flip 09 promises, if nothing else, to produce some great flyers, T shirts and badges….Watch this space…

…all will be revealed on Monday 6 July.
